Diddy On Singing Debut

Justin Timberlake says he’s bringing sexy back, but Sean Combs says it never went away.

“Sexy” has been one of Diddy’s favorite go-to words for the past few years. Just look at some of his party invitations or even the Proactiv commercial in which he claims the acne medication helps him “preserve my sexy.”

“I think he was inspired, you know,” Diddy, overseas promoting his Unforgivable fragrance, recently said of Timberlake. “I’m a big fan of Justin’s, and he’s allowed to use my catchphrase and run with it. I mean, I got it from somebody else, so it’s all good. But I am the king of the sexy, Justin. Let’s not get it twisted.”

Maybe in October, when Diddy’s Press Play comes out (see “Press Play On Diddy’s October LP, Hear Christina, Kanye, Mary J.”), Justin will be telling MTV News that he inspired Chairman Combs. See, Puff is trying something new on his album: He’s going full-throttle as a vocalist on one song.

“I make my singing debut on Press Play,” he said. “I did this duet with Keyshia Cole called ‘Last Night.’ I represent all of the shower singers out there. I’m not the greatest singer, but I have a lot of emotion in my voice, and this song is a totally different sound for me. I wanted to take some risks on this album, and ironically it’s a lot of people’s favorite track. I had a lot of fun doing it.”

Diddy leaves all the singing duties to the Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole on “Come to Me.” In the new video for the song, the two try to seduce each other.

“She’s definitely, to me, one of the next female superstars,” Diddy said. “I thought that she would play a great seductress and somebody that I could chase, too — the cat-and-mouse thing. And [I also thought] that we could dance and have some fun.

“It definitely has a hip-hop, rock-star appeal,” he added of the clip. “I admire all of the rock stars — especially a lot of the British rock stars — for their attitude. Looking at Mick Jagger back in the day, and just how the clothes and the attitude were a part of it.”

But Diddy said that in some of the upcoming videos from the album, we won’t see him as such an unflappable character.

“I’m a cool cat, but you’re going to see my coolness get broken down,” he said. “You’re going to see, as the story progresses, the shades come off. You’re going to be able to look into my eyes and feel what I’m going through. Even the visuals tell a story. So I may start out as cool, but the way I’m going to end up is going to be more true to life. We’re all human.”
